Lucia Santaella é professora titular da PUCSP com doutoramento em Teoria Literária na PUCSP, em 1973, e Livre-Docência em Ciências da Comunicação na ECA/USP, em 1993. É Diretora do CIMID, Centro de Investigação em Mídias Digitais, da PUCSP. É também coordenadora do lado brasileiro do projeto de pesquisa Probral (Brasil-Alemanha) sobre relações entre palavra e imagem nas mídias. (English follows)
Em 1987, foi professora convidada pelo DAAD na Universidade Livre de
Berlin. Foi pesquisadora associada no Research Center for Language and
Semiotic Studies (Centro de Pesquisa em Estudos Semióticos e de
Linguagem), em Bloomington, Universidade de Indiana, onde fez inúmeros
estágios de pesquisa de pós-doutoramento, de 1988 a 1994. Fez também
repetidos estágios em Kassel, Berlin e Dagstuhl, Alemanha, sob os
auspícios do DAAD/Fapesp, onde tem ministrado palestras e desenvolvido
projetos de pesquisa. É membro associado do Interdisziplinäre
Arbeitsgruppe Kulturforschung (Grupo Interdisciplinar de Pesquisa em
Cultura) da Universidade de Kassel.
De 1982 a 1990, exerceu o cargo de presidente da Associação Brasileira de Semiótica. Em 1991-93, foi secretária da Associação Nacional de programas de pós-graduação em Comunicação (COMPÓS). Desde 1988, é membro do Conselho Diretor do Instituto Internacional de Semiótica com sede na Finlândia. Em 1989, foi eleita Vice-Presidente da Associação Internacional de Semiótica, tendo sido re-eleita para o cargo em 1994, exercendo-o até 1999. Em 1993, foi eleita membro do Conselho Executivo da Federação Latino Americana de Estética, com sede na Argentina. Em 1996, foi eleita vice-presidente da Federação Latino-Americana de Semiótica. De 1999 a 2002, foi Presidente da Federação Latino-Americana de Semiótica.

Participou dos grupos idealizadores e realizadores dos cursos de graduação em Jornalismo, em Publicidade e do curso multidisciplinar em Tecnologia e Mídias Digitais da PUCSP.
Tem 23 livros publicados, dentre os quais 4 são em co-autoria e dois de estudos críticos. Organizou também a edição de 7 livros. Tem mais dois livros no prelo. Além dos livros, Lucia Santaella publicou mais de 200 artigos no Exterior e no Brasil.
Lucia Santaella is full professor at São Paulo Catholic University, PhD in Literary Theory (1973-PUCSP) and Livre-docente in Communication Studies (1993-ECA/USP). She is the director of CIMID, Center of Research in Digital Media, PUCSP, and also the director of the Brazilian side of a PROBRAL research project (Brasil-Germany/Capes-DAAD) on word and image relations in the media.
In 1987, she was guest professor at the Freie Universität, Berlin (DAAD). She was also associate researcher at the Research Center for Language and Semiotic Studies, Bloomington, Indiana University, where several post-doctoral research projects were accomplished, from 1988 to 1994. Several research projects were also developed in Germany (Kassel, Berlin, Dagstuhl/Fapesp-DAAD) from 1995 on. She is presently an associate member of the Interdisziplinäre Arbeitsgruppe für Kulturforschung, Universität Kassel.
From 1982 to 1990, Lucia Santaella was the president of the Brazilian Semiotic Association. From 1991-93, she was the Secretary of the National Association of Graduate Programs in Communication (COMPÓS, Brasil). In 1988, she was elected member of the Council of the Semiotic International Institute (Finland). In 1989, she was elected Vice-president of the International Semiotic Association. She was re-elected for this position in 1994-1999. In 1993, she was elected member of the Executive Council of the Latin American Federation of Aesthetics. In 1996, she was elected Vice-president of the Latin American Federation of Semiotics. From 1999 to 2002, she was the President of the Latin American Federation of Semiotics.

Lucia Santaella participated actively in the groups that conceived and launched the undergraduate courses on Journalism, Advertising and the Interdisciplinary course on Technology and Digital Media at PUCSP.
She has published 23 books among which 4 are co-authored and 2 are critical studies of literary works. She has also organized and edited 7 books. Two of her books are in print. Furthermore, the books, she has published more than 200 articles in Brazil and other countries.
